Clearwater, Florida - Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), announced today that it is asking the public to assist CMA in naming its newest member of its North American river otter family. The female otter was rescued by the CMA staff on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 at the Clearwater Executive Golf Course.
Weighing 1.5 lbs, the otter was found lethargic and dehydrated, abandoned by her mother. Twenty-four hour around-the-clock care and various medications and injections have been needed during the rehabilitation period, facilitating a quick recovery and a weight gain to nearly four pounds.
The otter is very energetic and doing well. Due to its medical conditions, abandonment by its mother, and inability to survive in the wild, she will be a permanent member of the CMA otter family.
CMA is inviting the public to assist in naming the otter. CMA is requesting a donation of $20.00 for each name submission, and all such funds will go to the care of the CMA otter family. The naming contest will be open until March 22nd. The person who wins the contest will be invited to CMA for an official naming ceremony. The name will be chosen by the CMA staff from all submitted names.
Anyone wishing to submit a name can do so by going to the CMA website at www.SeeWinter.com and clicking on the "Name Our Otter" link, or by calling 727-441-1790 x 222 by March 22nd.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a Florida 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to marine animal rescue, rehabilitation and release, and environmental education.
