BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - - SUNY Fredonia and the Buffalo Zoo have teamed up to give Western New York's river otter its 15 minutes of fame.

River otters were extinct in Western New York until scientists began to reintroduce them in 1995. The Buffalo Zoo has four of them.

Tiffany, "They're a symbol of how healthy or unhealthy our water systems are. We're so lucky to be around so many bodies of water here. And you can tell when an animal is not doing well, it means the water system is not doing well."

When it comes to the conservation of the river otter, the Buffalo Zoo is recognized as a success story. River otters are extremely sensitive to changes in their habitat. They require lots of space to live and lots of pollution can kill them. The Buffalo Zoo has accomodated the river otters quite well. And those efforts will now be featured in an episode of "AquaKids." A production crew began filming for the show's new season in September today.

Molly McKinney, "We travel around the country and teach kids about saving marine and aquatic environments."

Molly McKinney, the host and a senior from SUNY Fredonia, played a big role in choosing the zoo for one of the show's excursions.

Molly McKinney, "I get to reseach the location, speak with the scientists that work there and figure out how we can work together."

And working together means national attention for this otter exhibit.

Tiffany, "It is important for Aquakids to be here because I don't think a whole lot of people undertand that Western New York is a place for aquatic wildlife and it's a perfect place to showcase what we've got here in terms of wildlife."

Molly McKinney, "I chose the Buffalo Zoo because we were filming in the area and I wanted to do a highlight of the facilities in the area. That is has to offer."

The show Aquakids is seen around the country on cable and public access channels. The Buffalo episode filmed today is scheduled to air in September.
