Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium placed three new Asian small-clawed otters, a threatened species, on display to the public for the first time Thursday.

The three males, named Mac, Hank and Charlie, are the first such litter born at the Tacoma zoo. The trio were born Jan. 31 and had been staying with their parents, Chunk and Denali. They opened their eyes for the first time about a month ago.

Asian small-clawed otters are the smallest species of otter.

“They’re acting the way little curious baby otters should act,” said senior staff biologist Paul Povey minutes after they were released into a display room. “They’re running around and checking the area.”
